Over the past several years we have experienced a need to support children with special needs. Today 1 out of 10 kids are diagnosed with a disability ranging from a learning disability to developmental disability. This spectrum is an incredibly diverse group. After extensive research and vision development by a team of volunteers, the decision has been made by our Elders to move forward with a special needs ministry for preschool and elementary children.
Our special needs ministry is in the foundational stages. This ministry will be volunteer led by Pat Gay. Pat has extensive experience as an educator, principal, and director of special needs at local schools. She is now retired and ready to offer her professional services to lead this ministry. Pat will be partnering with the KidsPointe children’s ministry team to develop, implement, and facilitate the ministry.
The first phase is a pilot program. We are limited in the scope of what we can provide and accommodate. While we would love to meet the needs of every special needs family immediately, we will only be able to pilot this ministry with current KidsPointe children. These children have already been identified and the team is currently working with them and their parents. Phase 2, beginning in September, will offer special needs ministry for preschool and elementary children. We will do our best to minister to each family with a special needs child. However, in the early stages, we may be limited in the scope and capacity of the ministry. The process of inclusion will be very specific. Families will go through an evaluation and interview so that we may better understand the needs of the child, the family, and our capacity to meet their needs.
We are looking for people who are interested in volunteering and becoming a part of the special needs ministry. If you have a compassionate heart and are trainable, you qualify to be a part of the ministry. If you would like more information about volunteering or the scope of the ministry contact Pat Gay at patgay@zoomtown.com.
